Need an adjustable sheet metal vent built in Flint? A customer brought 16 gauge sheet metal into IronMann’s Flint shop and needed an adjustable vent for his air mover. We plasma cut it to his dimensions, set a hinged flap into the plate, gave it a pipe lever, and had it finished in a morning. More on our custom metal fabrication.
IronMann Industries builds custom metal parts for customers across Flint, Burton, Fenton, Davison, Grand Blanc Township and Saginaw.
A customer brought us his own sheet metal and a simple problem. His air mover needed a vent he could adjust. Something he could open and close.
We cut the 16 gauge sheet to the numbers he gave us on the plasma cutter, built a hinged flap with a 3/8-inch pipe lever, and had the job finished the same morning. Here’s how it went together.

Working From the Customer’s Material and Measurements
Some jobs show up with engineering prints. This one showed up as a sheet of 16 gauge and a set of dimensions from the guy who owns the air mover.
That works fine. We’re a build-to-print fabrication shop, so we cut to the customer’s numbers, not ours. He knows his equipment. Our job is to turn what he measured into a part that fits.
How Did a Flat Sheet Become an Adjustable Vent?
Short answer: plasma cut to size, a flap hinged into an opening in the plate, and a pipe lever on the flap so the customer can swing it open or shut.

- Cut to his dimensions. The sheet went on the plasma cutter and came off at the size the customer gave us. Get this step wrong and nothing after it fixes the fit.
- Build the flap. The plate has a rounded-corner opening with a flap that sits in it and swings on a hinge along one edge, and that flap is the part that actually controls the air.
- Add the lever. A length of 3/8-inch Schedule 40 pipe runs across the flap from the hinge end, so there’s something solid to grab instead of prying at the flap’s edge.
- Paint it. The finished vent went out in gray paint, which matters because bare steel left in the air rusts.
Why 16 Gauge Sheet and 3/8 Pipe Work Here
16 gauge steel sheet runs right around 1/16 inch thick. Light enough to cut fast and handle on a bench. A vent plate isn’t holding up anything but itself, so it doesn’t need heavy plate.
One thing that trips people up when they spec a handle like this: pipe sizes are nominal. A 3/8-inch Schedule 40 pipe isn’t 3/8 inch across. Its outside diameter is about 0.675 inch, a little over 5/8. If you’re measuring for clearance, measure off the real number, not the name.
The payoff is the reason he came in. Now he can control the airflow on his air mover.
Flap Open, Flap Closed: How It Moves

Lift the pipe and the flap pivots on its hinge and swings down into the opening. Push it back and the flap lies flat with the plate again.
That’s the whole mechanism. No linkage, no cable, no motor. A hinge, a flap and a handle. Fewer moving parts means fewer things to wear out.
Cut, Built and Finished in One Morning
Start to finish, this job was done in the morning. Material in, vent out.
A one-off part doesn’t have to turn into a big production. When the customer brings the material and knows his numbers, a job this size can move fast.
Why IronMann for One-Off Fabrication?
Flint earned the name Vehicle City building carriages and then cars. We’ve been running a fab shop on Lapeer Road since 2014.
Dennis Julian is an AWS Level I and II certified welder, and he’s still on the shop floor. When you call, you talk to the people who build the part. Certified welding, CNC machining and plasma cutting all happen under one roof, so a vent plate gets the same attention as the custom cantilever steel rack we built for another customer.
