Need a cantilever rack for raw steel in Flint? IronMann built this one in two days from 12-inch C channel, 5-inch C channel, 4-inch I-beam and square tube. Received material now goes to a designated slot instead of getting moved around the floor again and again. More on our structural steel fabrication work.
IronMann Industries fabricates structural steel for shops, plants and contractors across Flint, Burton, Grand Blanc Twp, Fenton, Davison and Saginaw.
Steel without a home gets moved. Off the delivery, onto the floor, shoved aside for the next job, dragged back out when somebody needs that corner. Every move costs time, and every move is another chance to ding, bend or scratch material you already paid for.
Our team recently fabricated a multi-slot cantilever steel rack in Flint, MI, built from 12-inch C channel, 5-inch C channel, 4-inch I-beam and square tube. Two days of work. Now received stock has one place to go, and it goes there once.
What Does Unsorted Stock Actually Cost?
Short answer: Time and material. Steel with no designated spot gets handled over and over, and each handling is labor plus a fresh chance of damage.
That’s the whole problem, and it’s why this rack exists. Nobody plans to move the same bundle of channel over and over. It just happens when the floor is the storage system.
The damage part gets overlooked. A bent flange or a gouged edge on long stock can mean cutting around the bad spot or scrapping the piece. Handle it less and you give it fewer chances to get hurt.
How We Built the Rack
The build broke into three pieces of work. Nothing fancy. Just steel cut, fit and welded in the right order.
- Arms onto the columns. With the columns lying flat across stands, the arms were clamped upright and welded in place, so each one stays where it was set while the bead goes down.
- The base. C channel laid out in an H pattern on the floor, ground clean at the joints, then welded where the pieces cross. Everything above sits on these welds.
- Stand it up and load it. The column assemblies went upright on the base, and the stock went onto the arms, off the floor and organized.

Why a Cantilever Design for Long Stock?
A cantilever rack has no posts across the front. The columns stand at the back and the arms reach out, so a long stick of channel or tube loads from the open side without threading it between uprights. Less wrestling. Fewer dinged ends.
The base matters as much as the arms. On the finished rack you’ll see the base legs run out under the arms. Loaded arms want to pull the rack forward, and legs reaching out under that load are a big part of what keeps it standing straight.
Channel and I-beam earn their spot too. They’re the same structural shapes that go into mezzanines and machine bases, stiff for their weight, and they weld up clean to each other.
And the payoff is the one this job was built for. When material is received now, it has a designated spot. That cuts the time and energy spent handling the same stock more than once.
Two Days From Floor Layout to Loaded Rack
Short answer: The whole build took two days, start to finish, and the result holds structural stock up off the floor in organized slots.

Two days. That’s what it took to go from loose structural shapes to a rack holding channel, angle and tube where anybody can find it.
Is a rack like this worth it for you? Honest answer: if your stock is a handful of short drops, probably not. A bin or a cart will do. If long material lands on your floor regularly and gets moved more than once before it’s cut, a dedicated rack takes that wasted handling off the table.
Why IronMann for Shop Steel
We do structural steel fabrication in Flint: beams, equipment bases, catwalks and mezzanines that add usable square footage, and racks like this one. Smaller one-off pieces fall under our custom metal fabrication work.
Dennis Julian holds AWS Level I structural and Level II pipe certifications, and you can see what that covers on our certified welding page. When the job has to happen inside your building, our mobile unit handles on-site industrial welding.
If your receiving area is a pile, tell us what you stock and how long it runs. We’ll tell you straight whether a rack makes sense.
